Everyone I’ve met has a horror story of coming face-to-face with a broken U.S. healthcare system. Here’s mine, from a healthcare developer’s perspective.

As a South African-born entrepreneur, my first role in the U.S. was as the Chief Technology Officer of Candid. At the time, Candid was in the early stages of realizing its vision to bring affordable oral healthcare to millions of underserved Americans. I led technology for the company, growing the team and building the tech stack from the ground up, and helping scale Candid into a nationally-recognizable healthcare brand.

This experience surfaced for me a lot of the cracks in the infrastructure of the U.S. healthcare system. We were constantly battling against non HIPAA-compliant vendors, lack of documentation, undocumented methods, or the dreaded “we’ll send you an NDA first."

No Postman collections? Check.

API docs behind an NDA? Check.

Docs last updated in 2014? Check.

.asp extension on URLs? Check.

Metered API usage? Check.

Check, check, check.

I learned (often the hard way) the challenges of developing an engaging, patient-centric digital health experience.

On average, it takes around $500k and 15+ months to launch a HIPAA-compliant mobile app from scratch, pricing many providers out of the opportunity. Those who do get to market often find themselves spending substantial resources on building a myriad of integrations and complying with complex healthcare regulations — money which could have been used to build a more engaging experience with a better go-to-market plan.

If you’ve tried to build a healthcare service in the last 10 years, you’ve probably also experienced this too. Whether building an app for mental health or pre-natal care, you shouldn’t be forced to choose between spending tons of resources building your own backend, storing your data in siloed legacy IT systems, or taping together solutions that don’t talk to each other.

Where integrations are one of the most time-consuming and difficult requirements of building a digital clinic, we’ve curated a suite of best-in-class partners so providers can easily plug and play prebuilt integrations into their backend — without writing a single line of code.

Capable already has partnerships with popular, HIPAA-compliant vendors for messaging, scheduling, and lab orders, in addition to a staffing network for prescription fulfillment. Our vision is to lower the barrier to entry for digital health care entrepreneurs and incumbents — from startups and pharmas, to payers and hospital systems — enabling them to serve the 46 million Americans currently unable to access the high-quality care they need.

We’ve grown from a team of one to a 30-person strong company of passionate experts with backgrounds in healthcare, fitness, SaaS and enterprise software. We launched the Capable platform last summer, and we’re already powering venture-backed healthcare startups from allergy care to functional medicine to women’s health. It’s been an incredible year of growth, resulting in thousands of lives under care already.
