Democratizing access to healthcare infrastructure with a $6M seed round
The walled garden of healthcare
Everyone I’ve met has a horror story of coming face-to-face with a broken U.S. healthcare system. Here’s mine, from a healthcare developer’s perspective.
As a South African-born entrepreneur, my first role in the U.S. was as the Chief Technology Officer of Candid. At the time, Candid was in the early stages of realizing its vision to bring affordable oral healthcare to millions of underserved Americans. I led technology for the company, growing the team and building the tech stack from the ground up, and helping scale Candid into a nationally-recognizable healthcare brand.
This experience surfaced for me a lot of the cracks in the infrastructure of the U.S. healthcare system. We were constantly battling against non HIPAA-compliant vendors, lack of documentation, undocumented methods, or the dreaded “we’ll send you an NDA first."

I learned (often the hard way) the challenges of developing an engaging, patient-centric digital health experience.
On average, it takes around $500k and 15+ months to launch a HIPAA-compliant mobile app from scratch, pricing many providers out of the opportunity. Those who do get to market often find themselves spending substantial resources on building a myriad of integrations and complying with complex healthcare regulations — money which could have been used to build a more engaging experience with a better go-to-market plan.
If you’ve tried to build a healthcare service in the last 10 years, you’ve probably also experienced this too. Whether building an app for mental health or pre-natal care, you shouldn’t be forced to choose between spending tons of resources building your own backend, storing your data in siloed legacy IT systems, or taping together solutions that don’t talk to each other.
That’s why I founded Capable Health.
Building an industry-first platform for launching your digital health clinic
At Capable, we’ve developed the industry-first software platform enabling providers to launch and scale their own fully HIPAA-compliant digital clinics with 80 percent less cost and time than it currently takes. Our one-stop platform enables any doctor to open a digital clinic in days (not years).
Providers can launch their own branded digital clinic using Capable’s platform to guide their patients seamlessly through onboarding and sign up, deliver personalized care plans to keep patients on track with their health goals, and connect patients and providers directly through messaging and video chat.
Developers can use our API-first platform to quickly spin up their application on best-in-class backend infrastructure, freeing up their time from maintaining and managing the backend plumbing to focus on what matters to patients: the frontend experience including UI and UX, and care delivery model.
Where integrations are one of the most time-consuming and difficult requirements of building a digital clinic, we’ve curated a suite of best-in-class partners so providers can easily plug and play prebuilt integrations into their backend — without writing a single line of code.
Capable already has partnerships with popular, HIPAA-compliant vendors for messaging, scheduling, and lab orders, in addition to a staffing network for prescription fulfillment. Our vision is to lower the barrier to entry for digital health care entrepreneurs and incumbents — from startups and pharmas, to payers and hospital systems — enabling them to serve the 46 million Americans currently unable to access the high-quality care they need.
Progress to-date and our seed round
We’ve grown from a team of one to a 30-person strong company of passionate experts with backgrounds in healthcare, fitness, SaaS and enterprise software. We launched the Capable platform last summer, and we’re already powering venture-backed healthcare startups from allergy care to functional medicine to women’s health. It’s been an incredible year of growth, resulting in thousands of lives under care already.
Along the way, we met the teams at M13, AlleyCorp, and Able Partners who were as excited about empowering the next generation of digital health clinics as we were. We’re proud to be partnering with them on our $6 million seed round. Learn more in this Axios article announcing our raise.
This new funding round will allow us to expand Capable’s team and continue to build healthcare better. We’re just getting started.
